# Refining Renders

<details>

<summary>Can I refine or iterate on a render?</summary>

Yes. AI Renders supports two refinement paths. To try a completely different direction, adjust your style preset, prompt, or reference image and generate again from scratch. To make targeted changes to specific areas of an existing render, use Select & Edit to refine just that section while keeping the rest of the image intact. Both approaches are fast, so you can iterate freely until you land on the direction that works best.

<summary>How do I use Select &#x26; Edit to refine part of an AI Render?</summary>

Use the freeform brush tool to draw over the specific area you want to refine. A pop-up will then appear where you can enter a new prompt describing the change you want for that area. laiout will regenerate just that section while keeping the rest of the render intact. You can undo any Select & Edit change to revert to the previous version, and Select & Edit works on any existing AI Render in your project.

<details>

<summary>How do I upload a reference image within the Select &#x26; Edit flow?</summary>

When drawing on the image with the Select & Edit brush, a pop-up appears where you can add a reference image alongside your prompt. Upload the image directly from the pop-up to guide the Select & Edit result.

<details>

<summary>What file formats are supported for Select &#x26; Edit reference images?</summary>

You can upload JPEG and JPG files as reference images for Select & Edit.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Is the reference image applied only to the selected Select &#x26; Edit area?</summary>

The reference image is applied to the whole image being generated rather than only to the selected Select & Edit area. This means the reference influences the overall aesthetic direction of the regeneration, not just the brushed section. If you want to guide the overall style of a render from scratch rather than refine an existing one, see the style reference image approach on [Styles and Prompts](/visualising-your-space/styles-and-prompts.md).

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I use multiple reference images in a single Select &#x26; Edit edit?</summary>

One reference image can be added at a time in a single Select & Edit action. If you want to explore multiple visual directions, run separate Select & Edit actions with different reference images.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What kind of reference images work best?</summary>

Detailed and precise images work best, rather than moodboards with lots of information. If you want something very specific, add it in the written prompt alongside the reference image, so the system has both visual and textual guidance.

<details>

<summary>Can I use text prompts alongside a reference image?</summary>

Yes. Text prompts and reference images can be combined in the same Select & Edit action, giving you both descriptive and visual control over the result.
