# Zones & Colours

Zones & Colours is where you define and style zone kinds for your organisation, including zone names, colours, icons, and custom zones. Zone Variants is a separate tab under Presets, covering the size definitions for each zone kind. The two are documented together here, but they are accessed from different places in the app.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Why do the zone icons look different?</summary>

Most zone icons have been refreshed for visual consistency across the platform. This includes a distinct new colour for the Pod Area zone type, helping you distinguish it from other room types at a glance. The updated icons appear automatically across the interface, so no action is required.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Can I add my own icons?</summary>

Custom or user-uploaded icons are not supported. Zone icons are drawn from laiout's built-in icon set, which has been designed for visual consistency across the platform.

<details>

<summary>Can I add more zone kinds to my organisation?</summary>

Yes. Add more zone kinds under the Custom category in the Zones & Colours tab, available after clicking the Initial button on the left side bar. See [Zone Editing Overview](/editing-your-layout/zone-editing-overview.md) for the full custom zone kinds workflow, including how to request them in your preferences before generation.

## Zone Variants

<details>

<summary>What are Zone Variants?</summary>

Zone Variants let you define what zone size variants mean for your organisation. A zone kind is the type of space (for example, Focus Zone, Coffee Area, or Open Workspace), and a zone variant is a predefined size variant of that kind (XS, S, M, L, XL, or Custom). Zone Variants let you configure the number of people, area per person, and total area for each of those variants, so they reflect how your team actually plans spaces.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Where do I access Zone Variants?</summary>

Open the side panel by clicking the Initial button, then go to Presets and select Zone Variants. From there you can view and edit the presets for every zone variant across your organisation.

</details>

<details>

<summary>What can I customise for each zone variant?</summary>

For each variant of each zone kind, you can set the number of people (as a range or a single value), a default pax value, the area per person (as a range or a single value), a default area per person, and the total area. This gives you full control over what each size means when planning spaces.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Are Zone Variants applied globally or per project?</summary>

Zone Variants are applied globally across your organisation once you save them. This ensures that every user on your team plans from the same size definitions.

</details>

<details>

<summary>Do changes to Zone Variants affect my existing floor plans?</summary>

New Zone Variant Preset values are not applied automatically to floor plans that already exist. When new presets are saved, existing floor plans display a Profile Updates Available notification, letting you choose to sync the new values on a per-floor basis or reject them to keep the current settings on that plan.

</details>

<details>

<summary>How do Zone Variants affect layout generation?</summary>

When you request zones in your preferences, laiout uses the number of people and area definitions from your Zone Variants to generate layouts that match your organisation's planning standards. This makes generation more consistent with how you plan spaces in practice.
