# Zone Editing Overview

You can adjust zones in multiple ways: change zone types, split or merge zones, adjust their size and position, add or remove walls, and place furniture within them. See the specific pages under Editing Your Layout for each of these workflows.

Yes. Click on any zone to open its details panel, which shows the zone type, area, capacity, and any related metadata.

Event Space is a native zone type with its own properties and constraints. Add it via the zone picker in the same way as any other zone kind, and it will size and configure appropriately for large gathering areas.

<summary>How do I add a Pod Area (Booth) zone for calling pods?</summary>

Pod Area is a dedicated zone type separate from meeting rooms, with its own icon and colour. Add it via the zone picker and place it wherever you need calling pods within your layout.

<summary>What are pre-existing zones?</summary>

Pre-existing zones are core spaces defined in your floor plan before generation, either drawn in AutoCAD or added in the Pro cleaner. They include Stairwell, Elevator Shaft, Bathroom, Core Room, Terrace, Balcony, and Kitchen. Unlike zone kinds you request in your preferences, these are set in the base file rather than generated by laiout.

<summary>Can I edit a pre-existing zone after a layout is generated?</summary>

Yes. Once a layout is generated, you can change a pre-existing zone to any kind available in the zone change dropdown, which includes default and custom kinds. For example, a Bathroom can be changed into a Breakout. You can also split and merge pre-existing zones like any other. Note that you cannot change a zone into a kind that is not in the dropdown, such as Elevator Shaft.

<summary>Can I change a pre-existing zone back to its original kind?</summary>

Once you change a pre-existing zone to a selectable kind, you cannot switch it back to its original core kind, because pre-existing kinds are not in the zone change dropdown. To reverse an unintended change, use Undo, or return to an option or an empty floor plan where the change was not made. The original kind is always preserved in the base file.

<summary>Do my zone changes affect the original floor plan?</summary>

No. Changes apply only to the option you edited, to new options generated after the change, and to any favourites you save in that state. The base file is untouched. If you return to an empty floor plan, the zone appears as it was originally defined. For example, if you change a Bathroom to a Breakout and save it as a favourite, new options show it as a Breakout, but the empty floor plan still shows a Bathroom.

<summary>Can I predefine regular zone kinds, not just core zones?</summary>

Yes. Alongside core pre-existing zones, you can predefine regular zone kinds in your base file, for example a shape intended as a Meeting Room. This can be done in the Pro cleaner or in AutoCAD. Zones predefined in AutoCAD disappear once circulation is edited, so the Pro cleaner is the more reliable option for these.

<summary>What is a Terrace zone and how does it differ from a Balcony?</summary>

Terrace is an outdoor zone kind that behaves almost identically to Balcony. The key difference is that a Terrace has no ceiling in the 3D view, so it renders as a fully open outdoor space. Both Terrace and Balcony remain available. During cleaning, choose whichever matches the space you are working with: Balcony if the outdoor area has a ceiling above it, Terrace if it is fully open to the sky.

Terrace and Balcony are not zones you request in preferences or select through zone change. Like Bathroom, Stairwell, and Elevator Shaft, they are pre-existing zones defined before generation, either drawn in AutoCAD or added in the Pro cleaner.

<summary>Can I place furniture on a Terrace or Balcony zone?</summary>

Yes. Furniture can be placed on Terrace and Balcony zones in the same way as on interior zones.

Yes. Terrace is counted towards both NIA and GEA, the same as Balcony.

A Terrace is rendered as fully open in 3D view, with no ceiling above.

<summary>What is a custom zone kind?</summary>

A custom zone kind is a zone type your organisation has defined in addition to the default zone kinds included in laiout. Examples include a Cinema Space, Bike Room, Gym, or Storage area, any space type that reflects how your team plans regularly. Once created, custom zone kinds behave the same way as default zone kinds and can be used across your projects.

<summary>How do I create a custom zone kind for my organisation?</summary>

Click on any existing zone in your layout, select the change icon, and choose Custom. From there you can define a name for the new zone kind and add a symbol so it becomes part of your organisation's zone library.

<summary>How do I request a custom zone kind in my preferences?</summary>

Open the Preferences panel and add your custom zone kind alongside the default zone types. You can create a brand new custom zone kind directly in the panel by selecting Add, then Custom, and naming it and choosing an icon. Any custom zone kinds already created in your organisation also appear here for you to select. Add either to your request before generation, so laiout can generate them into your layout automatically.

Custom zone requests are area-based. In your preferences, specify a total area for each instance of a custom zone kind. For example, request a 100 sqm Gym, or five 10 sqm Storage rooms, depending on how you need each space to be sized.

<summary>Can I request multiple instances of the same custom zone kind?</summary>

Yes. Add as many instances of a custom zone kind as you need within the same preferences setup, each at whatever size you require. This is useful when you need several rooms of the same type, such as multiple Storage rooms or a set of identical Gyms.

<summary>Do custom zone kinds appear differently from default zones in my layout?</summary>

Custom zone kinds appear in your generated layout at the sizes you requested, styled according to how you set them up (name, symbol, and any other properties defined at creation). You can identify and interact with them in the same way as default zones.

<summary>Do custom zone kinds work in both Pro and Lite mode?</summary>

Yes. Custom zone kinds are available in both Pro and Lite modes, so you can create and request them regardless of the upload mode you are working in.

Yes. The manual placement workflow is fully supported. You can request custom zones in your preferences to have them generated automatically, add them manually after generation by editing your floor plan, or combine both approaches within the same project.
